Putting the "fun" in "funds" — a sock company manifesto

Why a sock company themes its designs around fintech jokes most people will never get. A small manifesto about humor, niche brands, and being okay with that.

Most sock companies sell socks that could go on anyone’s feet. Goldman Socks sells socks that say something specific to a specific group of people. We’re betting that niche is interesting.

Designs that are jokes

Bull & Bear Market Socks. A bull on the toe, a bear on the heel. “BUY LOW” on one ankle, “SELL HIGH” on the other. If you’ve ever read a trading newsletter you get it instantly. If you haven’t, the design is still cool.

BAAS Sheep Socks. “BAAS” is the fintech-industry acronym for Banking-as-a-Service. It also sounds exactly like the noise a sheep makes. Hence the sheep on the socks. The whole joke is the homophone. We made them anyway.

CardsFTW Argyle. Classic argyle pattern in CardsFTW brand colors. CardsFTW is a credit-card-industry newsletter. The sock is a wearable nod to that community.

Why niche works

When a sock costs $16 and ships free over $50, you’re not optimizing for mass appeal. You’re optimizing for the people who will love the sock so much they tell five other people who’ll love it too.

Mass-appeal socks compete on price and quality. Niche socks compete on identity. They say “I get this thing other people get.” They start conversations on the subway.

What we won’t do

We won’t make generic “finance bros” socks with dollar signs all over them. That joke is dead.

We won’t make a sock that’s funny without also being a sock that’s well-made. Made in North Carolina, 60-day no-questions return policy.

A short list of designs we’ve considered but not made

  • “Hot Wallet” sock (lit from within, somehow)
  • The “Series A” sock (just a $ sign)
  • “Compound” interest sock (literally a recursive pattern)
  • “Liquid” socks (the liquidity joke is too easy)
